Bernie Krause

Bernie Krause will present a lecture at the Aquarium in conjunction with the recent release of his book, The Great Animal Orchestra: Finding the Origins of Music in the World’s Wild Places. Since 1968 Dr. Krause has traveled around the world recording and archiving the sounds of creatures and environments. He identified the concept of biophony based on the relationships of individual creatures to the total biological soundscape within a given habitat. His interactive environmental sound sculptures can be heard at the National Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, and the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.

Dr. Krause was a key figure in implementing natural soundscapes as a resource for the National Park Service. In 2006 he led three teams to capture the first natural soundscape examples ever recorded in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The Great Animal Orchestra will be available for sale and Dr. Krause will be signing copies after his lecture.
