Dinosaur Annex Music Ensemble is a leading presenter of chamber music of our time. Based in the culturally vibrant city of Boston, the ensemble is dedicated to bringing cutting-edge works from around the globe to the public through live performing, commissioning, and recording. Founded in 1975, the group has given hundreds of premieres. Their innovative repertoire embraces a wide stylistic range of music by modern masters as well as by emerging composers.
Members of the ensemble perform regularly with Boston’s finest musical organizations, including the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, Boston Ballet, and Handel & Haydn. The players’ individual artistry, knowledge of contemporary techniques, and finely honed teamwork deliver consummate performances to composers and audiences alike. To this end, the ensemble works cooperatively with Co-Artistic Directors Yu-Hui Chang and Sue-Ellen Hershman-Tcherepnin.
Dinosaur Annex has been featured in numerous recordings on labels that include Koch, New World, Navona, Bridge, Centaur and Capstone. Among the group’s recordings and performances that have earned great praise is Lew Spratlan’s opera Life is a Dream, for which Spratlan was subsequently awarded a Pulitzer Prize. Equally dedicated to education, Dinosaur Annex presents an annual Young Composers Concert that features public-school-age musicians side-by-side with the ensemble, performing music by composers just completing their studies or on the cusp of their careers. The ensemble is proud of its efforts to ensure that contemporary music remains alive and energized.
Dinosaur Annex gets its curious name from the group’s origins as the musical “annex” of New England Dinosaur Dance Theater. The ensemble incorporated independently in 1977.
